STI BASICS

STI stands for sexually transmitted infection.

This happens when a bacteria, virus, or parasite enters the body, usually via another person’s bodily fluids.

Using a barrier –– a condom –– during sexual activity prevents STIs by blocking the exchange of these fluids.

STIs are extremely common!  Here are the 6 most common in the US, rank-ordered:

  1. Chlamydia
  2. Gonorrhea
  3. HPV
  1. Herpes
  2. HIV
  3. Syphilis
