Athletes: How To Beat Forehead Breakouts

The sun. The sweat. The hustle. That’s athlete life. At some point, forehead breakouts appear, and eventually, start feeling like part of the uniform. But guess what? They don’t have to be.

Many young athletes assume forehead acne is just something that comes with the territory. Teen hormones + constant sweat = breakout city, right? Not always. In fact, a lot of those breakouts are caused by the very things you wear to protect yourself.

Hats, helmets, sunglasses, and sweatbands are all great for blocking the sun, keeping sweat out of your eyes, and protecting your head, but they also trap sweat, oil, and bacteria right up against your skin. That combination, plus friction, pressure, and heat, is a breakout waiting to happen.

And it’s not just the gear. Sunscreen and skincare products can build up under hats or sunglasses, clogging your pores and leading to breakouts. Then there’s the habit of wiping your forehead with your jersey, sleeve, or random towel mid-game, which only spreads more bacteria. Oh, and if you’ve been wearing the same unwashed hat or sweatband all week? Yeah… your skin definitely noticed.

So, What Can You Actually Do About It?

First: don’t ditch the sunscreen!!! Sun protection is super important, even on cloudy days. Luckily, there are easy ways to keep your skin clean and healthy without triggering forehead flare-ups because of it.

– Wash your face, but keep it gentle.

Wash your face twice a day (morning and night) with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser to help remove the sweat, oil, and grime without over-drying. Post-practice, a quick rinse with water or a gentle wipe will do wonders. But skip the scrubs—harsh exfoliants only make irritation worse.

– Blot, don’t wipe.

Wiping sweat off your face with your jersey or sleeve is tempting, but it spreads bacteria. Use a clean towel or paper towel instead, and avoid rubbing.

– Wash your gear. Often.

Your sweatbands, hats, and helmet liners collect oil and grime fast. Make sure you’re washing them regularly and letting them fully dry. Clean gear = cleaner skin.

Sunscreen Without the Breakouts

Again, SPF is a must. However, using the wrong kind can clog pores, especially when worn under gear. Look for:

  • “Non-comedogenic” (won’t clog pores)
  • Oil-free or gel-based formulas (lighter and less greasy)
  • Mineral sunscreens (gentler, better for sensitive or acne-prone skin)
  • Stick or powder sunscreens (easy to reapply mid-game or during practice)
  • Tinted sunscreens (not a must, but the tint can actually improve UV protection by reflecting visible light—plus it blends better, especially since traditional sunscreens tend to leave a white cast)

Also: try not to layer on heavy skincare or makeup before practice or a game. Save that for after; your skin can only take so much under headgear before it throws a fit.

Bonus Tips

  • Wash your gear with fragrance-free detergent, especially if it touches your face (less irritating).
  • Let your skin breathe when you’re off the field. No hats or headbands when you don’t need them.
  • If you’re trying a new product, patch test it first, especially if you’ll be wearing it under gear for hours.

Bottom line? Your forehead isn’t mad at you, it’s just reacting to a mix of sweat, friction, and buildup. With a few easy swaps and cleaner habits, you can protect your face and your game. Breakouts don’t have to be part of the uniform.

Keep working hard out there!
