ORDER OF MYELINATION

Myelination happens in a very specific order.

It starts at the bottom of the brain in the innermost area and works its way upwards and outwards.

  • Myelination starts before birth.
  • It takes 3 decades to complete the process.
  • By middle school, the brain is about half myelinated.

This order of myelination explains why the limbic system develops before the prefrontal cortex.
