Your brain has nearly 100 billion neurons.

They communicate through chemical and electrical signals.

The ends of each neuron receive signals through chemicals called neurotransmitters.
The long middle of the neuron shoots an electrical impulse.
The faster a neuron can send its message from one end to the other and then onto the next neuron, the more quickly the body responds.

The terms “brain development” and “brain maturation” mean the same thing when it comes to adolescents: they’re both about neuronal speed. Neurons in “mature” parts of the brain send signals fastest.
